What Are Antique Ningxia Rugs?

Antique Ningxia rugs are among the rarest antique Chinese carpets. Woven primarily during the Qing Dynasty for Imperial palaces, temples and wealthy officials, they are distinguished by exceptionally soft wool, elegant Chinese symbolism, natural dyes and refined artistic design. Ningxia Chinese rugs have soft wools, low density of knots and heavy use of soft colors, especially yellow, and to some extent pinks. The motifs are in general use in other types of Chinese rugs but are rendered in a less constricted manner, ie. looser.

These rugs are in my opinion, and most others, the most beautiful and well designed of all the Chinese rugs. They embody a very soft feel and at times an almost dreamlike quality that is very difficult to put into words. This type of rug has to be experienced; words alone simply cannot do the task.

Where Were Antique Ningxia Rugs Woven?

Ningxia is a semi independent area in North Central China bounded by Inner Mongolia with the Yellow River running through it. It has been known for hundreds of years for its wool production.

The Ningxia weaving region lies in north-central China along the historic Yellow River. For centuries, the area served as an important crossroads of commerce along the Silk Road. Its location brought together Chinese artistic traditions with influences from Tibet, Mongolia, and Central Asia.

Carpet weaving flourished in Ningxia from approximately the 17th through the early 20th centuries, reaching its greatest artistic development during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Although weaving continued into the early Republican period, the finest examples were generally produced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when craftsmanship reached its highest level.

Unlike many village rugs produced solely for local use, Ningxia carpets often served the Imperial Court, wealthy government officials, Buddhist monasteries, temples, and prosperous merchant families.
