There are 20 pairs of birds in various positions in the two trees. There is another small tree between the larger ones with green leaves and birds. The trees are covered in flowers in blue, pink, ivory, green and tobacco all on an ivory ground. There are four reciprocal borders. The larger ones are vine and leaf design and the two pairs of smaller ones have geometric motif. The major border is done in two shades of blue, ivory, touches of red and pink all on a dark blue ground of meandering vine and flowers. It is a very finely woven handmade wool rug. One end is missing a row of selvedge, otherwise the rug has complete ends and sides. There are a couple of low spots, none larger than a thumb. This late 1940’s handmade Sarouk Persian Oriental rug measures 11’9” X 14’8”. It has a beautiful indigo blue field with a huge red medallion sporting bouquets of flowers at the compass points. The blue field is the home of many different floral motifs, not enough to be crowded but enough for comfortable living! The deep blue background gives the feeling that the floral design is floating. It has ivory corners with lovely floral motifs all encompassed with a cherry red major border with chrysanthemums and a meandering vine motif. This 1890-1920 Sarouk measures 4’7” X 16’7”. It has a very pale mauve field with an overall floral motif with 14 images going up the edges of the field that look like birds, but they aren’t birds, they are flowers and flower heads in coral and very pale yellow green with leaves in blue and eight floral motifs that look like bees. The inside minor border is a trefoil design. The major border is a meandering vine and floral motif on a navy blue ground almost black in color. The outside border I don’t have a name for but it’s very cute. The rug has beautiful soft wool and to be perfectly honest this rug is so confusing and weird that it’s almost like a magic carpet. I find this rug to be exquisitely drawn. It has the ability to take the viewer right into the rug into a totally different place. The more I look at it the more I like it.
