The end borders have nothing to do with each other. The side borders are situated differently and out of align with each other. The reciprocal borders are on a yellow ground heading towards tobacco and have a meandering leaf and flower design. The ends and sides are complete. The rug shows wear consistent with its age. This is one of the most attractive and complicates Kubas I have ever seen. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $75.

There is a trefoil outer border done in blue and nice reciprocal borders on either side of the major border. The ends and sides are complete except for one row of knots about 2” long at the top dog tooth border. This I can have fixed if it irritates you. The ends and sides are complete. This rug is 99% full pile perfect condition and incredibly finely woven. The only part that could be considered not full pile is due to age erosion. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $75.00.

This circa 1880 Caucasian Prepedil Kuba Oriental rug measures 4’0” X 6’3”. The rust red field has a design of stylized birds in ivory, blue, green, black and tobacco. There are six borders which is odd. The inner border is meandering vine on an ivory ground. The major border is multicolored octagons in blue, rust, and black on an ivory ground. The outer border is a Prepedil border in rust and tobacco. Antique Kuba Oriental Rug 3’8” X 5’7” #7895

7895 kuba lesghi image

This circa 1875 Kuba measures 3’8” X 5’7”. This is a Kuba in a Leshgi design. The center, which I’ve never seen laid out like this, is a dark blue rectangle with a terra cotta background and two deep red abrashes across the star. The rest of the panel is filled with hashtag designs, flowers and tiny squares in a very asymmetric layout almost as if they were simply thrown onto the rug. North and South of the dark blue panel are two stunning ivory Leshgi stars. One is outlined in light blue and one is outlined in dark blue. There is an eight sided figure in the center of each of the stars. The layout and the colors remind one of Jaf Kurd. The tomato red field upon which the stars are resting is very asymmetric. The layout at each end is totally different. This is a very artistic rug. The major border is composed of flowers with eight petals in dark red, peach, tobacco and ivory on a very dark blue ground encompassed by two ivory reciprocal minor borders which at first glance appear to be twins as in every set of reciprocal borders you see but they are not. This rug is in my opinion unique in its class and type. It is essentially in perfect condition except the fringe at one end. The other end the fringe hasn’t even been opened. The sides are complete. Clean and ready to go. If this rug doesn’t take your breath away you are probably in the wrong business. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $75.00.

The next border has pale rose colored flowers on a darker rose ground. An interesting little touch in the flowers is that some of the centers of the flowers are in ivory and some are in blue or black. The outer main border is a running dog motif in ivory, blue and touches of red. The rug is basically full pile or if you are really touchy it could be considered evenly low. After all, it is a brown ground rug. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $100.00.

The inner and reciprocal borders are on red and blue grounds. Two reciprocal borders are separated by an ivory border containing little flowers. The outer border has various renderings of crosses shaped like flowers and game boards in Baku blue. The more I look at it, it may be a Baku. It has a very fine back like a Baku and I have never seen this color in any rug but Baku. I guess that’s what makes this fun.  It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $50.00

#7347 Kuba/Shirvan Antique Caucasian Rug 4’0″ X 6’4″

7347 kuba

This first-half 19th-century Kuba/ Shirvan measures 4’0” X 6’4” (121 x 195 cm).  It has an ivory field divided into segmented diamonds set off by serrated blue edges each containing a flower form . It is encompassed with a very clear dark blue border (not navy) with a black embossed arabesque design separated with a very beautiful barber pole motif which is one to 2 inches long. This border is flanked with two large barber pole borders woven on a slant. The border closest to the field is a very dark terra-cotta and all four sides of it are different. This is  very rare and not often found in Caucasian rugs. The field motif is not the rarest of motifs but this has many asymmetric qualities and is very nicely designed. The coolest part of this rug, in my opinion, are the borders. The interior border, in my experience, is unique and the blue border with a lazy S motif in an embossed black is very beautifully drawn. I have never seen this little barber pole treatment. This rug is in very good condition. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $75.00.

#6449 Kuba Antique Caucasian Oriental Rug 4’6″ X 6’5″

6449 Kuba antique rug

This circa 1850 Kuba measures 3’8” x 4’9”. It is a fantastic and essentially mint condition Kuba for its age. This beauty has 14 diagonal rows of a very abstract flower motif in ivory, light blue, peach, green, red and dark blue. Each design is just a little bit different, with no two alike. They are drawn in a diamond grid with a cube split four ways at each point, all on an ivory ground. All four borders are different diamonds and triangles with a cross hatched design on a rose ground. The outer border is very asymmetric also with flower motif in yellow, rose, blue and red on a sky blue ground. This is one of the most exciting Kubas I have ever seen. The asymmetric elements are really wonderful and the rug is essentially perfect. It does have some repairs to it. The buyer pays the shipping and insurance $75.

7742 Kuba photo

This circa 1850 antique Kuba Oriental Rug measures 3’8” X 5’1” (116 x 155 cm). It has an ivory ground completely covered in a combination of shield and palm head design with multi colored diamonds across the top in tobacco, red, blue, and black. There is a barber pole border of the type found only in Kuba flanking the majorborder with crab design on a medium blue ground. The two vertical borders have crabs nicely spread out. Across the top they become a little more squeezed together and at the bottom they are a little tighter yet. There are all sorts of  cute little things spread throughout the rug. There is a little quadraped, little diamonds and I forgot to mention there is a date 1222. Email me if you want to know what that translates to if you cannot work it out. The ends and sides are complete. The ivory is full iple and the reds are a little low. That’s a common thing in Caucasian rugs. The rug is very finely woven. It is in beautiful condition.  It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $50.00

#7735 Kuba Antique Caucasian Rug 4’3″ X 5’11”

7735 kuba antique rug

This very antique Kuba rug measures 4’3” X 5’11” ( 131x 182 cm). As far as the putting an age on this rug, this could possibly be an 18th century rug. I make no promises. I have no name for the field motif. The only thing I can say for sure is that the border has a very complicated variation of an ivory running dog on a blue ground. The rug is evenly low. The sides are original. It is missing one row of knots at one end and two rows of knots at the other. That to me for this age rug is not a big deal. The rug is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $75.

Types of Antique Nomadic Caucasian Rugs

old antique kazak caucasus wool carpet

Caucasian Rugs were largely woven by the nomadic cultures from the Caucasus region in the mid to late 19th century using  long haired wool sheared from the sheep they raised. The hand spun wools were hand dyed with vegetal and mineral based dyes, and the hand knotted  area rugs have fascinating beautiful designs. The geometric and sometimes floral designs were produced on small looms  and were unique to each weaver. These rugs were utilized for all aspects of tribal living. They came to be popular in Europe in the late 1880’s and have been prized possessions ever since.

#7556 Shirvan Antique Caucasian Rug 3’3″ X 4’6″

7556 Lesghi star Shirvan

This 4th quarter 19th century Shirvan Lesghi Star Caucasian Oriental Rug measures 3’3” X 4’6” (100 x 140 cm). It has six Leshgi stars on a black ground. Exactly in the middle across the field the black is corroded to the foundation (if there is not some corrosion, it is not old). There is a tiny bit of asymmetry in the field which is composed of stars, flowers, and scampering horses all in pale green, red, natural pink and pale blue. It has three equal sized borders. The one in the center consists of flower heads combined with a semi Kufic border ala Kuba in the same Kuba rosy red. And the more I look at it …this rug is probably a Kuba. The edges have been replaced with a machine edge but the ends are finished like a Kuba. The two reciprocal borders are composed of flowers and stylized bird heads on an ivory ground. Except for the corrosion in the black and the replacing of the edges, the rug is perfect. It is full pile. The ends are complete. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $50.00.
