This circa 1870 Peking Chinese Rug measures 6’0” X 8’6” (183 x 262 cm). It is a very interesting and very early Chinese carpet. For sure 3rd quarter 19th century. It has a nice center medallion with two birds looking at each other in what could pass as a Garden of Eden type jungle. The iconography is very interesting. At first glance it may seem to have repeated designs. It does not. Every icon in this rug is different except for the twins that are east and west of the center medallion. The eight other iconographic images are all different from one another and they are all done in white and a pale blue on a darker blue ground. The corners are worked in floral motif all surrounded with a very narrow ivory band. The border is to me unique. I can hardly believe there are only two colors in this rug; blue and white. Very serene. How Chinese. This rug is essentially in perfect condition. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go. This rug is stunningly beautiful. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $95.00.
