Description

This circa 1650 Ningxia Chinese Oriental Rug measures 6’5” x 12’5” (195 x 378 cm). It is the so called ‘Rice’ design motif on a yellow to wheat colored ground. There are five medallions with one in the center and one in each corner. The ones in each corner are different than the one in the center. All five contain variations on a cloud design in two shades of blue and peach. A floral wreath containing a cross is in each corner. The minor border is a blue running Greek key design on a peach ground. The major border is one not often seen in Chinese rugs. It is a modified meandering vine and flowers in several shades of blue and peach. The rug shows wear consistent with its age. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go on anyone’s wall. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $125.

Please see this article reprinted from a 1915 pamphlet about “Grains of Rice Rugs’. There is a photo of this type of rug. This is a very rare rug and would be the centerpiece in anyone’s collection!
