This first-quarter 19th-century Ningxia measures 4’2” x 5’11” (128 x 182cm). This rug is in 99% full pile condition with the exception of an area in the outer right-hand border which is 1” wide by 6” long. This is moth damage and will be repaired. The rug has an overall floral motif consisting of what appears to be butterflies in blue and white flitting among four floral wreaths and sprigs of flowers. It has nicely worked floral corners. The center medallion is worked in a very odd and to me undefinable floral motif, all on a medium peach ground. The inner border is the pearl design in ivory on a dark blue ground. The main border has a floral motif with large flower heads in ivory, two shades of blue and dark peach on a beautiful yellow ground. The yellows and this rug are utterly fantastic. There is a lot of it and it is very deeply saturated. This rug is probably 200 years old and it transcends the word carpet and enters deeply into the realm of art. The buyer pays for shipping with insurance of $75.
