This late 19th century Peking Chinese Oriental Rug measures 6’4” x 8’5”. It has a dark blue variegated field with a corner motif of phoenix birds perched in a tree growing out of a rockery. This motif is repeated in the center circular medallion and is also repeated in a different format in the border. I personally have never seen this motif in quite this layout. The birds in the corners can almost be thought of as sitting on a nest. The one in the center medallion can almost be flying through clouds. The birds in the border are in the horizontal as opposed to the vertical as in the field and they appear to be connected with a flower and vine motif, which in itself is not very common in a rug of his age. While the blue is essentially full pile the mottled ivory has corroded very nicely, serving two purposes. For one, it gives the rug a 3-D effect. And two, it absolutely guarantees the age. The ends and sides are complete. The rug is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping with insurance of $95.
