Description

Suzani are embroidered fabric woven by Uzbek village women traditionally as part of their dowries and as a means of expression. The women would hand weave long strips of cotton or linen. A woman would pen her design onto the cloth and hand embroider the pattern with the help of her friends or relatives. The strips would then be stitched together to use in their homes. Oftentimes the personality of the individual embroiderer would come through and the sections may all look a little different. Today Suzanis are still being produced as a revenue source and decoration for local homes and businesses and sold in the markets of Uzbekistan.
